Main Characters of Without A Spark

By my count, there are about a dozen characters in Without A Spark with “speaking roles”, many of whom only appear briefly; there are also another dozen or so folks who are appear even more briefly or are only mentioned.

The main characters are Kevin, Maura, and Box:

Occupation: Student, University of Mud River
Gender: Male
Blood Type: AB
Age: 21

Laid-back, easy-going college student. Not easily surprised, and one who doesn’t take life too seriously. Scarred—literally—from past relationships; somewhat oblivious to romance. Lives with Maura.

Occupation: Student, University of Mud River
Gender: Female
Blood Type: A
Age: 21

Quiet and unobtrusive college student. A computer geek. Deaf. Good at acting tough and stoic and aloof, but much more personable around those she trusts. Patient and methodical. Not easily embarrassed. Lives with Kevin.

Occupation: Part-time lackey at the the Beaver Lanes bowling alley.
Gender: Female
Blood Type: B
Age: 24

Rebellious, in a quiet sort of way. Not particularly sociable. Generally confident that patience and luck will win the day. Keeps strange hours. Lives alone.

Supporting Characters

I could list the supporting characters here, but—other than the one that appears in the preview excerpt—most of their descriptions would be major spoilers for the novel.

Nonexistent Characters

The novel contains no werewolves, vampires, zombies, angels, demons, elves, orcs, goblins, trolls, or dragons; nobody shape-shifts, nobody sparkles, and nobody knows magic. There’s no Mary Sue, no Marty Stu, no Captains Kirk or Janeway, no fat Elvis, no skinny Elvis, no undead cannibal Elvis, and no badly-reanimated corpse of Ronald Reagan.
